Historical Theology of Modernity and the Contemporary Era

The Historical Theology of Modernity and Contemporary Era subject group was founded on September 23rd 2000. The group is German speaking but open to everyone. We are comprised of women working in the areas of history, whose research interests are in the periods between the 16th and 20th century, and who wish to discuss and deepen their historical-theological research concepts together with others.

Conceiving historical theological women’s research – how we see ourselves

We see the following as relevant to women’s historical theological research:

  • To consider gender an analytical and theoretical category as a constructive element for social interaction in which power relations are being expressed.
  • To integrate alternative female historical descriptions and experienced gender identities into a changing society, church and theological context.

Historical theological women’s research is:

  • Research about women
  • Research from a feminine point of view
  • Research that takes the feminist perspective into consideration
  • Studies in gender relations
  • Analysis of the development of socially constructed gender in the various historical epochs under differing political circumstances
  • Scholarly criticism: Deconstruction of the historiography of church history up until now, for example, by uncovering the andocentric point of view and ideological criticism, changing research paradigms

What this means for our work:

  • To understand women as the subject matter of history
  • To place the everyday experiences of women at the center of interest
  • To analyze religious and theological texts in consideration of the gender metaphors that are conveyed
  • To write history that takes the gender types into consideration
