The European Society for Women in Theological Research (ESWTR) is a network for women scholars in the fields of theology, religious studies, and related disciplines. Every two years, an international conference is held on a current topic in feminist theology. In the intervening years, women scholars meet at regional and national conferences, as well as for ongoing work in thematic and discipline-specific working groups.

At its general assemblies in 2015 on Crete and in 2017 in Vienna, the ESWTR decided to strengthen its interreligious orientation at all levels. The ESWTR publishes the Yearbook of the European Society for Women in Theological Research, which appears annually, as well as the series ESWTR Studies in Religion.

History of the ESWTR

The ESWTR has been an entity since 1986. Why was it formed? Who are the founders? What has it come to mean? How has the organization developed over time in different countries?

The ESWTR Herstory project aims to answer these questions. Angela Berlis, Malgorzata Grzywacz and Gertraud Ladner, the Herstory team, are collecting information and documents on the history of our association. Previous documents of the ESWTR have been transfered via the Helen Straumann-Foundation for Feminist Theology to the manuscript department of the Library of the University of BaselLibrary of the University of Basel, where an archive space has been set up for the ESWTR.
