About ESWTR

The European Society of Women in Theological Research (ESWTR) was founded in Switzerland in 1986 and today has over 600 members. It is a network for women in academic research in the areas of theology and religious studies, enabling women from different denominations and religions as well as from the whole of Europe, east and west, north and south, to meet and to dialogue. The Society organises a European conference every two years. Conference themes are intended to raise important issues in feminist theology. Between conferences women meet on national or regional levels as well as in thematic subject groups.

Responsible for the running of the Society is the Board, elected at the general meeting of each conference. Each country has a contact woman who is responsible for co-ordinating activities within that country.

Membership of ESWTR is open to all women engaged in academic theology, religious studies, or related areas. They may live and work in Europe or may be admitted after special consideration by the board. Members receive the ESWTR Newsletter and the Journal of the ESWTR. Countries set their own membership fees according to local conditions. There are different membership rates for women who are earning and for those who are studying or unemployed.

Further information on ESWTR, including membership details, can be obtained from the contact woman in your country.
